Normally dogs do not have any formations, bumps and swelling around the nipples. Their appearance should alert the owner and become a reason to visit a veterinarian. Most often, a lump on dog’s nipple appears due to the following reasons:
- cancer tumors;
- benign tumor;
Injury and skin over head of a tick may also provoke the formation of lumps. For these reasons, cones appear not only in the nipple area, but also on any part of the animal’s body.
More often malignant tumors are observed in older animals, but because of the adverse conditions of the cities today even young dogs with a strong immune system cannot resist pathological changes in the cells. A feature of such tumors is the rapid growth and rapid appearance of metastases. The tumor appears at first near near one nipple, but in a short time the lumps are formed in other nipples located next to it. This is due to the fact that the nipple is not a separate mammary gland. The dog has only 2 mammary glands that look like a line with several nipples. All malignant tumors affecting the mammary glands are divided into nodular and diffuse. The first category has clear boundaries and is not very large. Multiple formations can appear at once. Such hard lump on dog’s nipple area develops without metastasis for a long time, that is why the prognosis with timely detection is quite favorable.
Note!In the diffuse form of cancer, the tumor has a diffuse character and fuzzy boundaries. It grows quickly and to a significant size. Due to the fact that pathological fluid accumulates around it the appearing lump is boggy. In this form, the prognosis is unfavorable.
If the tumor is detected in time, and a surgical operation was performed, in which all pathological tissues were excised, the prognosis for the pet is favorable if you provide full care and competent recovery.
About 40% of all seals of the mammary gland in dogs are benign tumors. These lumps grow slowly for several years and do not cause discomfort to the animal. Dogs don’t usually pay attention to them. Prognosis for the animal in such situations is favorable. When these kind of tumors, in the vast majority of cases a boggy lump on dog’s nipple is found. It is better to remove benign tumors because they can turn into the malignant form when the dog gets older. The operation is not obligatory because this not always happens.
Although mastopathy is classified as a benign growth of the breast, it is worth considering the pathology separately from benign tumors. In this disease the animal is experiencing discomfort and sometimes pain. The illness occurs in dogs older than 6-7 years, when the body starts to undergo hormonal changes first. The main localization of growth is 4 and 5 nipples.
Initially, the tumor is single. If treatment is not carried out, multiple seals are formed. There is a problem usually after pride, pregnancy or false gestation. During these periods, there is a natural increase in the volume of the mammary glands, which after a certain period should return to normal. However, against the background of hormonal disorders, a change in tissues can occur, and then mastopathy begins to develop. If there is a risk of transition of the tumor into a malignant form, or it is seriously compresses the internal organs due to the large size, surgery is necessary. The prognosis after it depends on the condition of the animal.
Mastitis is the main cause of the lump near dog nipple in pregnant dogs. The disease is associated with a disorder of the outflow of milk and the formation of a milk cork, which creates favorable conditions for the growth of bacteria and the development of purulent inflammation. The lump is located near the nipple or under it. This disease often occurs after the birth of the puppies. Pathology is dangerous not only for females, but also for puppies, as infected milk easily leads to lethal poisoning. The main symptoms of the disease are:
- refusal of food;
- visible swelling of the breast in one or more nipples;
- soreness when touched, because of what the dog reacts with aggression to palpation of nipples;
- redness in the affected area;
- when pressing, the nipple discharge a small amount of milk with a mixture of blood and pus.
Treatment should be carried out immediately. To restore the normal condition of the animal antibiotic therapy is required as well as milking-off the stagnant milk and warm compresses. In severe cases, when the disease is severely neglected, surgery is required, in which the suppuration will be opened and the cavity will be sanitized. Without treatment, a dog dies in 95% of cases.

There are some other reasons why lumps occur in the area nipples in dogs:
The head of the tick. Because of this, the tumor appears anywhere on the body, including the place near the nipple. If after the removal of the parasite its head remained in the skin and did not come out and is now covered with skin, sluggish suppuration begins, resulting in a small tumor. After the abscess is opened and the curd purulent mass comes out of it, the problem will be eliminated. The formation of a lump after a tick bite is a common phenomenon. Treatment in most cases is not required, and the abscess can grow up to 2 years.
- Injury. There is swelling or a tumor with no clear boundaries. Especially often the nipple area of a dog with short legs is injured.
- Obesity. Some pets’ fat deposits are not formed uniformly and appear as a pair of cones in the center of the nipple. To distinguish them from neoplasms consult a vet.
In case a lump around the nipple in dogs is identified, you should immediately show the animal to the veterinarian. This will allow you to determine the cause of the problem accurately and timely and to conduct quality therapy.
