Humans are easily susceptible to various infection diseases. Unfortunately, pets are also vulnerable to environmental conditions. Sometimes it is even difficult to understand if a pet is sick. In animals, even the common cold progresses very quickly. For example, dogs often have a runny nose. Many owners start to panic and have no idea what to do. But it’s not as bad as it seems.
It should be mentioned that due to the physical characteristics of the body, some breeds of dogs are more prone to runny nose, for example, pugs. However, when a dog has runny nose, it may not depend on the breed. Usually this manifests itself as a reaction to the hypothermia, with rapid transitions of contrasting temperatures. Rhinitis often occurs in dogs in spring or autumn.
Note! But the weather is not the only factor. Quite often, rhinitis is provoked by the ingress of irritants, such as smoke or hot air into the respiratory tract. Sometimes different foreign particles, for example, spikelets of plants, get in the nasal cavity.
In fact, when a dog has runny nose, it may be a common inflammation of the mucous membrane. Rhinitis is often divided into 2 groups: primary and secondary rhinitis. Acute rhinitis in dogs may only be due to severe hypothermia or sudden change of air temperature. For example, a Russian hunting Spaniel can get sick while hunting in damp areas. Some decorative breeds have runny nose due to changes in climate conditions.
Sometimes, when a dog has runny nose and sneezing, it may be one of the symptoms of a disease, for example, distemper or inflammation of the pharynx. A running nose in dogs can progress to a more complex form and cause inflammation of the upper respiratory ways of the animal.
Symptoms of the Cold in Dogs
Pets also have some particular symptoms of the common cold. To some extent they even correspond to the human ones. Rhinitis in dogs is usually accompanied by sneezing. The pet may rub its nose with its paws from time to time, lick the lips. Of course, there is also the main symptom of a runny nose – discharge from the nose. At first the discharges are liquid and have almost no color. Then, the consistency becomes thicker. During infectious diseases the selection is usually purulent.
Because of the secretions, scabs are formed in the nasal pathways. The breathing becomes heavy, the dog can even sniff. Because of those scabs the pet starts to breathe through the mouth. In some cases, mixed shortness of breath may occur. The mucous membrane of the pet turns red. If the rhinitis occurs as a separate disease, its manifestations do not affect the general condition of the dog.
As for the types of rhinitis, the acute one passes within a week. However, without proper treatment it may become chronic. From time to time there are exacerbations. The animal be depressed and loses weight. In chronic rhinitis, cracks, erosions and other damage may occur on the mucous membrane. Rhinitis as a symptom of other diseases can last long enough, in some cases, even for several years.
.Note! In rare cases dogs have coarse or follicular types of rhinitis. They differ in the effect on the general condition of the body: fever, heavy breathing. Treatment lasts for 2 or 3 weeks
Sometimes you can determine the runny nose yourself. But it is better to go to the vet because he/she will be able to determine the very reason of the problem. The treatment often depends from the cause of the disease. The diagnosis is made in the presence of clinical signs, as well as depending on the anamnesis. This issue should not be underestimated, since the primary rhinitis treatment is often not necessary, but with secondary rhinitis, the dog should not be left without care. It is always better to prevent the disease than to treat it. To do this, you should feed the animal with healthy food, which contains all the necessary substances, and protect the animal from drafts.
As has been already mentioned above, the treatment of runny nose in dogs directly depends on the type and cause of its occurrence. It is better to seek advice from a veterinarian. In case of neglected disease when crusts are formed on the dog’s nose, it is recommended to soak them several times a day with a solution of hydrogen peroxide (3%). Only then you can remove the crusts not hurting the skin. In order to avoid further occurrence of crusts, the pet’s nose can be lubricated with vegetable oil or vaseline.
If a dog has runny nose when sleeping, menthol ointment (1-2%) may also help. In addition, you can use streptocid powder (gently blown into the nose of the dog). At home, you can prepare the following mixture: soda solution (1%) and tannin (0.5% solution). Onion juice is rather effective against rhinitis. It is necessary to moisten a small piece of cotton wool with onion juice, to form a swab and put it into the nostrils of the dog for about 10 minutes. The procedure should be repeated 4 times a day until recovery. Some owners use a decoction of beets to rinse the nasal cavity with a strong nasal discharge.
If after a week of such treatment no results of are achieved, the runny nose turns into a chronic form. In this case it is necessary to carry out additional procedures. For example, due to the constant discharge from the nose the skin becomes irritated, so it needs to be dried. To do this, use the powder of streptocid t, which should be sprinkled on the pet’s nose every day.
At the same time, you have to take care of the immunity of the pet. Veterinarians often recommend irradiation with ultraviolet light. Timogen drug is often. The amount depends on the dog’s weight. For pets weighing less than 10 kilograms the norm is 2-3 drops. The owner is responsible for taking care of the pet, its maintenance and timely treatment. So do not be careless.
