Not all masters can notice the appearance of a rash on the dog’s body in time. Especially if it is small, and the pet has thick hair. Timely detection of any rash can play a crucial role in making an accurate diagnosis.

Determining the cause – is the first step to recovery. This is especially true of fungal and bacterial lesions, which can also cause deep wounds and redness after scratching.

Description of Possible Causes

There are times when a rash on the skin does not pose any danger to the dog or to others. This applies to prickly heat, which is considered a constant companion of smooth-haired breeds in the summer.

Cases when the rash appeared and disappeared within a few hours can also be classified as conditionally safe. If, at the same time, no accompanying symptoms were observed, then it can be assumed that the pet was faced with some kind of allergen that provoked such a reaction (this could be perfume, the smell of washing powder or detergent).

If the symptoms do not disappear within 2-3 days, then the following reasons must be excluded without fail.

Demodecosis

May appear as black rashes on the skin. Localization sites are usually concentrated in the muzzle: ears, chin, brow ridges. Also, the bends of the limbs and the base of the tail are considered a favorite place for demodicosis.

A distinctive feature of this type of tick is the absence of itching. If the dog itches to blood, then the cause must be sought in a secondary infection (fungi or bacteria). But, even without itching, the pet can completely go bald due to the activity of Demodex. Therefore, it is often confused with lichen, which is characterized by the appearance of large bald patches in different parts of the body. Also, demodicosis only in puppies can manifest itself as a solitary disease.

In adults, it is always provoked by something. Usually this is severe stress, prolonged use of antibiotics, suppressed immunity (postoperative period), hormonal disorders (estrus, pregnancy, postpartum period). Therefore, in puppies, demodicosis is rarely treated, and in adults, they are looking for a cause that can provoke it. In animals over 10 years age, it will be advisable to exclude the tumor process.

Allergy

Almost all types of allergies are accompanied by the appearance of a small red rash on the skin. May be a short-lived event triggered by accidental contact with a potential allergen.

But, more often, nevertheless, allergies are characterized by a long, chronic course with periodic exacerbations. This is especially true for situations where an allergic reaction is triggered by contact with a house plant, pollen from a tree, flowering or grass. Sharpei, bulldogs, mastiffs, pugs and other decorative breeds very often, after walking in the forest or in the thickets of grass, small rashes may appear, which disappear within several hours.

If itching and redness appear, it is better to give the animal an antihistamine (suprastin half a tablet, tavegil or fenistil). If this does not help, then you will have to seek help from a veterinarian, since you will need to pick up more serious drugs. This usually happens after pet contact with ragweed.

Also, a rash on the skin may appear after the injection. This is a common reaction to the vaccine. In most cases, symptoms subside within a few days.

Pyoderma

The reason why your dog may develop a purulent rash. Almost always acts as a complication of diseases in which there are open wounds or deep scratching.

For the diagnosis, cytology of fluid from the lesions will be required. In severe cases, the skin rash can transform into large abscesses, which in turn can become fistulas.

If the cause of pyometra is established (and it was managed to be brought under control), then effective antibacterial drugs are selected to eliminate the symptoms. In severe cases, antibiotics may be prescribed.

Bites

A fairly common cause of a dog’s skin rash, which is accompanied by severe itching.

Usually these are fleas, ticks, flies, ants, gadflies or mosquitoes. Therefore, if the symptomatically manifests itself after a long stay in nature, then you should carefully examine the pet for ticks. If they are not found, then you can wait a few days, everything should go by itself.

A non-itchy rash is usually triggered by stinging insects (wasps, bees). But, instead of itching, there is a large swelling, redness and pain when touched. If there is no predisposition to allergies, then you can do nothing, everything will come off within a couple of hours.

Prickly heat

An absolutely harmless phenomenon that can be observed in your pet after a walk in the hot season, active play, from clothes (in winter). Such rashes are usually not accompanied by itching. They appear on the abdomen or back, less often on the limbs.

A dog’s rash can appear at any time of the year, anywhere on the body, regardless of age or breed. And if it is almost impossible to fight allergies, then you can protect your pet from insect and parasite bites with the help of regular treatments.
