Endless dysbiosis and bloating have become daily “companions” of humans. Recently, the uncomfortable disease has become a popular diagnosis in dogs as well. Swollen belly in dogs is a complex, many-sided symptom that indicates a bad diet in the best case and an incurable disease in the worst.
Bloating, in Its Classic Sense
Dogs are predators by nature and farinaceous food, sweet and other products containing “fast” carbohydrates are alien for their digestive. Spoiling a pet with a slice of pizza or a bun, you interfere with the “normal” metabolism. All products, including vegetables, which carry “fast energy”, cause the fermentation process. Bacteria that cause fermentation like sugar. Consuming carbohydrates, microorganisms emit gas, which is collected in bubbles and rises. The longer the food is digested, the more gas accumulates in the stomach and intestines. A strong dog having eaten a little “health hazard”, gets rid of the trouble naturally – through the anus.
Note!In medicine and veterinary medicine, the process of removing gases from the intestine is called flatulence.
What if the dog is constantly “gassy”? At the initial stage, you can help the pet by yourself. Your goals are:
- To reduce the pressure of gases on the belly wall. You should give baby drugs from bloating (Espumizan and analogues).
- To activate the gut flora. Use Hilak Forte or equivalent at the rate of 5 drops per 5 kg of body weight.
- To reduce swollen stomach in dog – Smecta, Enterosgel.
- To clean the intestines gently – Duphalac or equivalent.
Pay attention! If you have the opportunity to purchase special veterinary products from bloating or to show the dog to the vet, you should use such opportunity! The instruction described above applies to situations where there are no alternatives.
It worked? – Great! Again review your dog’s diet, exclude the product bringing discomfort to pet using the elimination method. If symptoms of bloating in dogs worsened:
- Profuse salivation appeared.
- The dog has swollen belly, the dog strains his hind legs, yelps.
- Unsuccessful emetic urges can be observed. If the dog started vomiting – watch to prevent dehydration, give Regidron. If after 1-2 times vomiting the condition of the pet improved, the body itself found a way out of the situation. In case vomiting repeats more than 4 times a day, the masses have a sharp putrid smell, yellow color or foam strongly, you should immediately consult the vet!
If you failed to reduce or remove the bloating of the dog during the day there is no more time to wait. When stretched, the stomach and the intestine slip of ligament, which fixes the internal organs. Going out for a walk, jumping off the couch, climbing the stairs, the dog can provoke a change of position of the stomach or intestines in the abdomen – volvulus.

Other Causes of Bloating in Dogs
The first thing a vet will ask when complaints of bloating – how long ago have you “fought” the worms? Preventively, dogs have to pass deworming every 3 months, if the procedure is missed or the pet is taken from the street, the worms are present for sure! Within 8-12 months, the parasites grow and multiply, turning into a ball, which is constantly increasing in size. The warms stretch the walls of the peritoneum. This looks like swelling especially in dogs of small breeds. The following diseases may also be the cause why a dog has swollen stomach.
Purulent inflammation of the uterus occurred in unsterilized animals. During the “empty” heat, the cervix is slightly opened, which can serve as an” entrance ticket” for infection. In addition, regular hormonal failures weaken the immune system. As a result, in the uterine cavity, the inflammatory process and the formation of pus begin.
Exudate eventually fills the uterus completely, stretching its walls, leaking from the loop. Bloating in dogs of small breeds or bulging “hematoma” in large dogs, elevated body temperature, uncontrolled consumption of water and purulent discharge from the genitals indicate the pyometra. Treatment, most often, involves the removal of the uterus.
Peritonitis is an acute inflammatory process, accompanied by the release of fluid, blood or pus into the abdominal cavity. The reasons can be so different that it is impossible to list them. There could be anything from the injury until the onset of the “hidden” chronic illness. Do not try to guess how to treat peritonitis, also, do not diagnose the pet yourself! The dog has a chance to survive in case a comprehensive survey is performed and timely professional assistance is provided.
Ascites is not a disease but a consequence. In the abdominal cavity of the animal fluid effusion from surrounding tissues is constantly accumulated. The dog which is chronically suffering from diseases of the heart, kidneys, lungs, liver, any system or organ, eventually “comes” to the ascites, or death. The root cause of ascites is difficult to identify, years pass before it occurs, and at the time of detection the heart, liver and kidneys are already “worn” to the extreme.
Most often, the vets offer to the owner to consider the option of euthanasia. The second option, prolongs the life of the pet, but requires lifelong treatment at home and regular visits to the vet. The fluid is pumped out of the abdominal cavity of the dog a comprehensive supportive therapy is conducted. Depending on the health of the heart, with the intensive treatment, the dog can live for 2-12 months, cases of remission almost never occur.
