On my chihuahua, pommeranian and Chinese crested mix harness i dumid see in the sign: No Touch,No Talk,No Eye Contact. In English… He is a partial demon dog so it is a warning. I never let anyone greet that dog. My podenco girl is too kind. To polar oppositeπŸ˜‚

I have always felt a bit weak if I come to a person's gate with a dog , and I don't really just go in . Like it feels not normal to consider 'it's safe' ? Visiting an asshole cousins home one day, her house is on land and surrounded by big fenced yard . You must go thru the big gate first , with massive bully to greet you. I hesitated at the gate as had not met the dog. My other aunty just opened and walked in – she knew it. Was i correct to just stop and not assume safe? How could I actually really tell ? And, I have 5 dogs , 2 cats. I still am unsure if other people's dogs, behind a fence , are safe to approach in their yard. Clarify- larger bully type breeds, that i have zero experience with .

another great thing to do, specifically for nervous dogs, is to crouch down and let them come to you first, talking to them or avoiding eye contact can also help them feel comfortable. however if there is a dog that's trying to bite you please do not crouch down and baby talk them because you crouching down gives them an advantage especially if they're big, and the baby talk or kissy noises might make you appear as prey because of the high pitched squeaking sound you're making. the crushing down method may not always work for nervous dogs, but in my experience it really helps!

I was with a foster family when I was 6yrs old and had no fear of dogs until I went to a relative of the foster family that had a Doberman mix guarding the farm I got down to the dogs level to pet it and it went for my jugular. I've gotten over it but I'm much more cautious around dogs now

You got to be the biggest dog in the room otherwise the dog is going to take advantage of you . Applies for human too.

I'm a small dude I'm just 5'3 I love dogs. I helped train my friends Rottweiler. It was hard for me to push him off and took a lot of acting like I was bigger but now he listens to me doesn't jump on me when I come over. He walks good on leash for me. He does like to give me one hug and kisses when I first get there lol. Do you think it would be ok for me to own such a big dog myself. Ik it's different owning then just coming over and visiting.

Having them sniff fists is better than open hands. If they do go for your hand, they can do a lot less damage when your hand is balled up than getting a hold of fingers. This is speaking from experience working at a shelter and having to handle nervous and aggressive dogs.

I generally don't go into dog's personal space, unless I know the dog quite well to say they'll be okay with it. I usualy just stop and chek wheter they will want to come to me on their own. If not, then okay…have a nice day. If they do, I will lower one hand to let them sniff. I pet only if they clearly show they want the affection. Just think of it a bit as greeting another human being. You probably would be preplexed if a stranger just came up to you and started snuggling with you out of nowhere. xD

    How to greet a dog?
    Ignore the dog.
    But don’t be dominant.
But you have to show you’re the biggest dog in that room.

I've always been taught to approach a dog calmly with my hand palm up so they can smell me and decide for themselves if they want my attention. But ONLY if they seem interested NOT stand off-ish. Gotta respect the dog. Also, was taught to ignore the dog if they jump on me.
