Our Cavapoo mini weighs about 9 pounds and she constantly shows her love by putting her paws up on my legs. Not a bother but annoying to some visitors

So much of it however is training the people first… she walked in and immediately raised her dog's excitement level with her behavior. I am not saying the method is not good, but successful dog training isn't just about the dog.

Thank you! I’ve seen so many videos that rely on instructing guests or strangers (which can be awkward), asking people to ignore the dog which for some reason people don’t know how to do, or using treats I don’t carry on walks. This approach is much more practical ! I can’t wait to try it!

My dog is waaaaaay too persistent for this. We'd be at the front door all night. He's like an energizer bunny he doesn't stop. Maybe more like that liquid metal Terminator. He's crazy and will not stop until he gets his way.

I will recommend no to create excitement talking to a dog when entering to the house. The dog is already excited to see you. And reward with a touch when demonstrating the right behavior.
Training with the leash, it really works! Thanks

This can potentially hurt your dog in the long run. Just ask a vet.

Oh, I need this. I'm picking up my daughter's pit bull pup later today for a week. He gets so excited when meeting anyone and coming into her home, you take your life into your own hands from him jumping. He's getting too big, with a head that looks like it's a concrete block.

I tried this. My dog knew he was on a leash and wouldn't jump while on the leash but he went straight back to jumping once he was off leash. Didn't learn anything and I am starting to get frustrated about it.

OK, where dog jumps on you, dont say a word. Just knock it on its keister with your leg. You're not trying to hurt the dog, just make him understand that there's no reward in jumping on people. then have friends and have them do the same. Dogs do things that reward them. Getting knocked on your behind is no reward.

This is great but it assumes that jumping happens when ppl initially come in. Not so with melly. A guest could be in the house for 5, 15, 45, etc minutes, pet her for the umpteenth time and she decides to jump. Can't use this tactic for that.

Thank you SO much for this. I've been trying to teach my 1 year old golden retriever for awhile now, but it wasn't working. I thought we were getting somewhere at first, but when she got excited and scratched the receptionist at the vet the other day, I knew that I had to try something else. It's only been a few days since then and I'm already noticing some progress, and I'm so relieved that it's working. Again, THANK YOU. I'm certainly recommending you to others if they need help with their dog.

Hi! I have a sweet but timid 1 year old rescue from a shelter. When I come home she jumps and leans into me because she wants affection. I would like to teach her to jump as command but I'd prefer if she doesnt do reactively. Is there a way for me to teach her "UP" while also discouraging her from doing it every time I come home or to strangers? I appreciate any advice!

The key is that you need a second person to help you train, someone who can trigger the same behavior, so that it can be corrected. My problem is, I can't get anyone to help enforce this rule; everyone I know is like "no its fine," or they immediately treat my 2 crazy dogs like babies, and they go nuts. I'm the only one they respect; all other people would either keep their distance or literally refuse to do anything other than reinforce the bad behavior.

So what do you do if you don’t have your dogs on a leash? You live out in the country and a UPS driver comes to walk across the yard for a delivery and your dogs run to them and jump all over them.
