I have a highly intelligent but undersolcialized dog who is dog reactive. She loves a game and Engage/Disengage is a game she plays well but it has made her reactivity worse, not better. My mechanics are correct and she only gets rewarded for disengaging. I'll even wait until she has disengage and walked away to treat. But the underlying fear is still there…it has not created a positive CER. It has created a negative one as far as I can tell. She's just playing the game with fear. Some dogs she can pass within 5 yards, others she can't pass within 500 yards so I don't know how to fix this.
This method worked amazing for my puppy, at first. But 3 months later now at 9m/o I'm having the issue that she disengages with me the moment I reward her and focuses back on the other dog stronger than before, gets nervous and may start to pull or pace quickly. I've tried to gain her attention back for more than 2 seconds but her attention on me is shorter and shorter each day and I'm not sure what to do. Any advice?
help! how do I get my dog to stop barking at cats from inside his kennel. 🙁 I have a service dog in training and I can't afford programs.. I don't know what to do to stop the behavior along with recourse guarding his food or toys.
Can I play this game near a dog park if i don't have have access to someone who has a dog? Your videos have been so helpful in training my girl. She is 19 months and has been a bit more distracted on walks lately.
I'm trying to train my pitbull mix puppy I rescued from the pound (she's about 3 months old) and whenever she's on the leash… She pulls. Of course I expected this, due to her being a puppy. However, my little Maple (the puppy's name) likes to lunge and bark towards other dogs. I'm unsure if it's aggression, nervousness, anxiousness, or what… But she gives a little growl with it too. Her body posture is tensed, with her ears up and alerted (she has floppy ears like a pit does), and her tail is sticking straight up with a slight curl to it. To me, that seems she's a bit nervous and standing her ground. I'm gonna try this with any triggers/distractions to see if this works as I'm trying to train her to be a Diabetic Alert Dog.
can someone comment another command phrase "preferably one worded or an onomatopoeia" for a substitution of the clicker . also a word that isn't frequently spoken .
What if the dog learns that every time it looks towards someone/something and looks back it gets a treat? Wouldn’t it purposely look at other things because it knows it gets a treat when it looks back at you?
This doesn’t work for my dog at any level. She goes bananas when she sees other dogs. Her reactivity is over the top with lunching, barking, and jumping up on her back two legs. I’ve backed it up to the door. Still the same. I’m at a loss.
But how do I do this with my 3kg chihuahua who ferociously barks the moment I take her out of the car onto the park where there is so much going on, I can't even get close to any trigger well enough to be able to start from the starting point of this training😢. She does the same with vacuum cleaners carry a bags you name it
I’m gonna try this but I’m seriously loosing hope ): My dog is being trained to be a service dog but he is reactive to people witch it the olny issue he barks and barks and I’m really scared he can’t be a service dog bc of this 😕
We've been trying this and similar games with our recently adopted 3 year old dog for about 6 weeks and he still fixates and loses it around dogs that are 100 feet or so away. We haven't seen any progress and we're feeling pretty discouraged. We're seeing a behaviourist soon at the trainer's recommendation, but any other ideas or success stories from people in similar situations would be greatly appreciated!
My dog barks and lunges at triggers the moment they are in his line of sight. There is no amount of space i can put between him and a trigger where he won't react. As long as the trigger is in his line of sight, he WILL react. What do i do then?
Me knowing that I needed to rewatch this video, but being too brainfoggy to remember the words "engage/disengage" to try to search it… I finally remembered and was able to find the video. One of my faves..
My poodle pup SDIT Cosmo is going through frustrations, lunging barking when he never has before, I looked and looked for ways that were PAIN FREE and this looks amazing thank you

Very helpful. Thank you
My pup is in a fear period. 😒
This game has helped every distraction become an opportunity as well as a way to gauge how distracted my dog is

What if I don’t use a clicker?

Really well done video! I teach this same method with my students but have never explained it as well as you did here. Thank you!

Do you have a video on how to train getting in and out of cars?
I have tried this, but as soon as my dog knows I have treats to give he refuses to engage with anything else. How do I deal with that?
So that means you always need to use the trigger and have treats?

How do you phase out the clicker?
I have two cats in my house, might have to start with using them as the distractions 😂.

If you typically use a clicker to mark a good behavior, would it confuse a dog if you use it when they are doing a behavior you do want?

Im getting my service dog prospect this weekend. He already has some basic training but i think your page is really gonna help me. ❤
Thank you for the counsel friend. Can the clicker possibly be substituted with a dog whistle?
